on living like a mighty river*

these words: "so, what do you plan on doing now?"

is it okay to put that question in the same category as "so, why aren't you married yet?"??

i mean, i guess the ask-er is trying to be supportive/show interest in your life/whatever. but i would rather wear a scratchy wool turtleneck for a week than actually answer those questions.

but since everyone in the world seems to care enough to ask me erryday, perhaps publishing my answer will cut down on the amount of times i have to recite the same shpeel. ((i will only answer the former question. it is too late and my brain is too dead to answer the latter. plus also that excuse simply means "i don't want to"))

my plan does not (currently) include any of the following: a) working at ______ as a full-time human with lots of benefits/big paycheck/etc b) living arrangements c) set-in-stone grad school plans

my plan does (currently) include all of the following: a) read all the books i've accumulated/put on my list for the past 5 years. b) cook/eat things besides grilled cheese sandwiches and frosted mini wheats. c) strap a backpack to my back and climb mountains as often as possible. d) purchase things i can maybe afford now that i'm not paying tuition: i.e. tent/sleeping bag/new glasses/plane tickets. e) and speaking of plane tickets, i will go places. lots of them. f) write/draw/create. g) learn the things i didn't have time for while i was busy learning other things (i.e. poetry, plant care, portuguese, how to reupholster furniture, photography, and many more). h) do yoga. i) volunteer. j) go to community classes and lectures. k) oh, also work somewhere magical. i guess that's important too.

my plan might include some of the following: a) get dreadlocks. b) certify as a skydiver. c) play soccer again. d) learn about personal finance.

because here is the thing i keep learning about life: plans don't always go as planned
because when you're just trying to live like a mighty river, suddenly you find out about dams being built or new logs floating along or heavy rainfall (or drought) that year. but the most important thing is that you keep flowing.
