on the decrepit state of the world

i'm currently working on a research project about inequality...thinking about where it comes from and how it started and why the world unequally rewards different people, etc etc. it's sort of a depressing project in many ways because it seems like such a huge/unsolvable problem. yet somehow i find there is a lot of hope in studying it because maybe if i understand it a little better, i can be a force for good. i sort of had to ditch my dream of saving the world because i was setting myself up to fail, but that doesn't mean i have to get rid of the idea that i can actually do things that matter (at least in a small way).

so tonight i am just a little obsessed with some words about Alma:
"Alma, having seen the afflictions of the humble followers of God, and the persecutions which were heaped upon them by the remainder of his people, and seeing all their inequality, began to be very sorrowful; nevertheless the Spirit of the Lord did not fail him." - Alma 4:15

the world is seriously insane. and unfair. and unequal. and stupid. and it's okay to feel super bummed about that. but the thing is...the spirit is what keeps pushing us forward and keeps reminding us of a vision of hope. being depressed and completely discouraged doesn't really solve anything. and leaving God out of things puts us in a position of trying to solve everything alone. neither of those options sound appealing or effective.
